Changing Your Environment to Enhance Your Creativity

June 15th, 2009 by Aaron Shields

Take out a piece of paper and write down three things: the place you spend the most time, the place you’re most creative in, and the place you’re least creative in. Next to each place write the approximate percentage of time you spend in it.

If you’re like most people, chances are two things are true: 1) You don’t spend the most time in your most creative space, and 2) Your most creative environment isn’t your workspace.

Studies have shown that changing the environment by doing something as simple as adding a plant or painting the walls can enhance people’s creativity.

Think about your most creative space. What are the top three things that stand out about this space for you? How can you transfer those things or a symbol of them to your workspace.

By aligning your workspace with your most creative space, you’ll enhance your creativity and facilitate your ability to produce innovations.

  • This idea really gets creative results! I put it to use a few month back after Aaron shared it during a creative workshop for Kohl’s. I have to say, it works. Thanks for posting!
